A.J.

By A.J. Foyt

With William Neely

Can you imagine yourself strapped to a jet engine speeding down a track at 200 mph? Well the American racing hero A.J. Foyt does just that in A.J. a biography By A.J. Foyt with William Neely. It all started in a small town outside of what now is Houston, Texas. All it took was a boy ( A.J. ) and a midget car. A midget car is a is a go kart for kids ages 12 to 19.

It all started when A.J. was a toddler in his dad’s mechanic shop. His dad would put him on the workbench while he worked on racecars. For fun A.J. would take his time getting down from the workbench and then crawl over to his dad’s midget car and pretend like he was driving it. By the time he was 8 A.J. already had his first midget car. His first appearance was on a dirt track as kind of like a side show at a race. There was a kid there who was the best driver there and about twice A.J.’s age and A.J. went up to him and out of the blue challenged him to a 1 on 1 race. It is bad luck in the racing world to turn down a challenge so he accepted. But before he accepted he went over to A.J.’s father and asked him if he thought that his son could beat him. His answer was definitely. A.J. got in his car and had already beat the kid into turn one. The race was only 4 laps which made it even easier for A.J. to win and he did. That was his first win, which started a chain reaction for him. By the time A.J. was 19 he had gone through midget cars and sprint cars. Now it was time for the big leagues. A.J. wanted to race Indy Car. Indy Car back then as the toughest racing league in the nation. So in 1958 A.J. was called by Clint Brawner an Indy car owner to race in the 500 that year. He jumped at the chance and qualified 16th and finished 9th. A.J. was hooked on the adrenaline rush.

I  loved this book because I like Indy Car and it was funny while at the same time informing you on A.J.’s amazing life. This book is mostly for boys but is for anyone who likes racing of any kind. This is my favorite book yet!

Book Review of

ICEMAN

by Chuck Liddell

Could you imagine yourself inside a cage with one of the world’s most respected fighters for fifteen minutes? ICEMAN by Chuck Liddell is a book about the life struggle of one UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) champion. It tells of his life of poverty, surviving in a rough neighborhood, and self defense all wrapped up in one riveting story! The UFC is an association that travels around the country setting up MMA ( Mixed Martial Arts ) fights in towns such as Tampa, Vegas, Chicago, etc. It is an association he started training for when he was a teenager.

Throughout Chuck’s life he spends most of his time with Dana, his manager, and his two best friends, John Hakkleman and Chuck’s brother Dan. Chuck’s goal in life is to become a UFC fighter and become the light heavyweight champion of the world. But before that would happen he would have to work his way up the list of contenders using his powerful right hook, kick-boxing skills, and knowledge of wrestling. One thing I could relate to is getting hit really hard because I play football and pretty much all I do is hit hard or get hit hard. I’ve also had to work my way up in football just like he had to do in the UFC.

I liked this book because I am a huge UFC and Chuck Liddell fan. My favorite quote from the book is “ you can lose as a man or win as a coward.” I would say that this is a book for boys and will interest anybody who likes boxing, kick-boxing or any other contact sport. My ranking on this book out of ten would be a 9 and a half stars!

Learning Style

Today in class we had to take a test that determines what kind of learner we are. We went to 2 different websites which I forget the name of. On one website it ranked you from 1 – 5 on these categories: kinesthetic, social auditory, visual, naturalist, spatial, musical, self, logic/math, and language. The other website ranked you with percentage. The first website ranked me 5 on Kinesthetic, 3.57 on Naturalist, 3.29 on spatial, 3.14 on social, 3 on musical, 2.71 on self, 1.86 on logic/math, and 1.57 on language. The second website ranked me with a percentage of 18% visual learner, 27% auditory learner, and 54% kinesthetic learner which I think hits me dead on. I think those websites were really acurate.

My new blog

Today I got my new blog. I named it SS or School and Sports. I’m going to try to talk about my recent football games or practices and talk about what I did in school that day or whether or not I did good on a test. I am choosing to do football on my blog because it is my favorite sport and it is my favorite sport to watch. I can’t wait to really start getting into it.
